DJP Update 11-23-2018 A- Season Greetings! B- A few family updates (awards and events) C- Gadgets D- LAGNIAPPE
A- SEASON GREETINGS!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with family and loved ones. We have much to be thankful for as Americans despite current day challenges. As a veteran, I always give thanks to those I see in military uniform for their service and willingness to go into harm’s way. Freedom and Liberty are not free.
B- A FEW FAMILY UPDATES
Son Donald Jr. and wife Ana are in Metairie for Thanksgiving with our 4 Atlanta grandsons. We visited the National WWII Museum in New Orleans as it continues to expand. Awesome museum.
Check out the website:
https://www.nationalww2museum.org
And note the ranking of this museum:
“NEW ORLEANS (September 19, 2017) – The National WWII Museum today announced it has been recognized as a winner in the 2017 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice™ awards for museums, ranking No. 2 in the world and No.2 in the nation.” https://www.nationalww2museum.org/media/press-releases/national-wwii-museum-named-no-2-museum-world-no-2-united-states-2017
Robin and I got together with the rest of the immediate family for a great Thanksgiving meal and family story swapping.
We are proud of some recent events in our family.

Moore, M.D., M.A.C.P.
Palmisano said that, “MAG’s relationship with ACP and ACP’s Georgia Chapter has been exemplary, and I accept this great honor with pride and humility on behalf of every MAG member.”

C- GADGETS
1- Computer – My mid-2009 MacBook Pro 15“ and my 2010 MacBook Air are at the end of their lifespan. Over the years I operated on them and put in new larger SDD hard drives and batteries but now aging problems are present beyond my repair abilities (non-functioning track pad etc.) and Apple won’t fix such old machines. After much testing and evaluation for use at home and travel, I decided on the 2018 MacBook Pro 13” with touch bar, and the upgraded optional 16 GB RAM memory, faster optional processor and graphics, plus expanded 1 TB SSD hard drive. It is fast! The Retina screen is great.
To view more specs, go to: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/
This computer may suffice for video production. It is fast and has four Thunderbolt 3 connectors!
The replacement for the 2009 15-inch MacBook Pro that I use as my desktop computer may be the Mac Mini. See https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/
No decision on that machine will be made until 2019 when Apple is predicted to announce a new Apple high definition monitor for it.
NOTE: If you are not familiar with Thunderbolt 3, consider this from Apple:.
“Thunderbolt 3 combines ultra‑high bandwidth with the ultra‑versatility of the USB‑C industry standard to create one revved‑up universal port. It integrates data transfer, charging, and video output in a single connector, delivering up to 40Gb/s of throughput for twice the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2.”
Less than one minute to copy 14 hours of HD video
Less than one minute to copy 25,000 photos
Less than one minute to copy 10,000 songs
More details at: https://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
2- Clock – We recently acquired some cube shaped clocks, Brandstand BPECT Cubie Alarm Clock Charger for the nightstands in the bedrooms. Each clock has 2 USB connectors plus two 3-prong plug in on top. The clock runs on electricity but has one AA battery to power it if electricity is lost. Works great. Cost: $58.95
You can obtain this clock at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Brandstand-BPECT-CubieTime-Charger-Charging/dp/B0178ECW6A/ref=ice_ac_b_dpb_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1543011921&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=nightstand+clock+with+usb&psc=1&smid=A1RR3ZLFR91BZM
D- LAGNIAPPE: There comes a time in life when a person fully realizes that our time on earth is limited. I also found that as one ages, the clock gives the sensation of moving quicker each day toward the end. Thus Robin and I got our departure arrangements in order and started getting rid of items we collected over the years. Often one realizes that a left behind item that one treasures is merely a burden for family to dispose. Although I now realize my Mustang with 5.0 liter (302 cubic inch) Coyote engine will be accepted readily by all based on current family views.
For me, I always had trouble getting rid of books. Books opened up adventures for me when I was at a boarding school for 6 years in grammar school. We were mandated to stay in the study hall each evening for 2 hours. That room contained the library. I would finish homework early and the library books became my friends as I awaited release from the study hall. This friendship allowed me to travel the world, spend 30 seconds over Tokyo during WWII, fight a crocodile with Bomba The Jungle Boy as he escaped the onrushing Marabunta Army Ants, and become a junior detective with The Hardy Boys.
Robin is the ultimate organizer and with her gentle persuasion, I came to the conclusion she was correct that we had to get rid of some possessions. Recently we gave to the Jefferson Parish Friends of the Library over 250 books. (So far I have retained all of my research books for my upcoming novel!)
My elective seminar at Tulane University School of Medicine as clinical professor of surgery and clinical professor of medical jurisprudence is entitled: HOW TO GIVE A MEMORABLE SPEECH. It is part of my leadership seminar teaching. The course has continually received great reviews from the students and it is now expanded to the professors. I will be offering it on the road for organizations and for keynote speeches. Stay tuned.
I also have two DJP Updated Expanded Podcasts recorded and in production now. These are individuals with passions outside of family and work. Will alert you when they are available for listening and viewing (images included). Three previous ones can be viewed at: http://djpupdate.com

DJP Update 10-20-2017 1) Hurricanes and Fires 2) 100-mile run by MAG CEO DJP Jr for driving safety campaign
1- Thinking of all who were in the path of recent damaging hurricanes and the horrific fires in Napa and surrounding areas. The psychological effects extend beyond the replacement of damaged property even when loved ones are not harmed. For those who lost family and friends, our sincerest condolences. In our area, Hurricane Katrina memories are vivid despite the passage of 12 years.
——
2- Son Donald J. Palmisano, Jr., J.D., CEO of Medical Association of Georgia, does another 100-mile run Oct 28-29, this time for a driving safety campaign. Robin and I will be in Arizona for the race with his wife Ana and our grandsons to lend support and take photos!
Distracted driving is an increasing hazard especially with texting and phone handling while driving!
Go to MAG Website site and consider a donation to help the campaign reach its goal.
“The Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) is encouraging member physicians and other individuals and corporate sponsors to support MAG Executive Director Donald J. Palmisano Jr. with a tax-deductible donation when he participates in the 100-mile ‘Javelina Jundred’ trail run in Arizona on October 28-29 to raise funds for a campaign that the MAG Foundation is developing to reduce distracted driving in the state.”
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, distracted driving is responsible for about 16 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. – which is about 5,000 deaths per year.
The AAA Foundation also notes that, “Nearly half of all people who say they feel less safe than they did five years ago say distracted driving by other drivers fuels their concerns.”
Palmisano hopes to raise at least $25,000 for the campaign, which is aligned with a patient safety policy that MAG’s House of Delegates passed in 2016.
Donors will be recognized on MAG’s website, MAG’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, and in the fourth quarter edition of the Journal of the Medical Association of Georgia.
While the list is expected to grow, early campaign sponsors include the MAG Alliance and the Medical Association of Atlanta.
To make a donation using a credit card, click on the link to the right.(DJP note: Click the PayPal link and then you will have the option of using PalPal OR a credit card). You can also make a donation by mailing a check that is made payable to the ‘MAG Foundation’ to Lori Cassity Murphy at 1849 The Exchange, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA, 30339.
Contact Murphy at lmurphy@mag.org or 678.303.9282 with questions.
Learn more about the End Distracted Drivingcampaign.
Support MAG’s CEO as he runs 100 miles to combat distracted driving
Goal: $25,000
Raised so far: $14,675
