#Gift – just switched to #Verizon #MiFi from USB card. Terrific; Now our entire home is #WiFi for 5 devices – stayed on unlimited plan8:20 PM Dec 20th via web
DJP Comment:  This is amazing device!  You can connect via WiFi to it or you can connect via USB.  Battery last 20 hours standby and 4 hours of use.  Recharges via wall plug or USB on your computer.  When on WiFi, 4 other friends can access Internet via your card as long as they are in the area, perhaps within 50 yards.  Not sure of exact distance but I confirmed when I have this credit card device turned on, our entire house has WiFi.  Amazing.  Here is a photo and a review:  http://www.connectreviews.com/2010/03/16/verizon-wireless-mifi-2200-mobile-hotspot-review/

Verizon gave me the device free as I had a month to month contract with them.  They allowed me to keep my unlimited data plan that costs $59.00 a month as long as I signed up for 2 years.  They switched the phone number from my USB 150 device to the MiFi device.  Happy to sign for 2 years as I have been very happy with Verizon for Internet access.  I also can use this as WiFi for my iPhone and surf Web and do Tweets when ATT service is poor but Verizon service is good.

MAC AIR:  And, justified by my torn right rotator cuff, predicted by orthopedist to have 85% chance of needing operation, a new very light Mac Air 11 inch with optional faster engine and extra RAM due any moment!  Have to decrease my carry-on on flights as that is how I tore the rotator cuff taking heavy bag out of overhead.

Didn’t go for iPad as I want USB ports to connect external hard drive and I don’t want to carry external keyboard.  Using camera attachment allows USB but it is disabled for external hard drive.  I write a lot and ALWAYS backup to USB thumbdrive when on road or portable hard drive at home.  “Cloud” backup doesn’t work for me when I am on 6 hour flight and no Internet access!  I have Kindle for my book reading plus daily newspaper downloads.  iPad is beautiful but doesn’t fit my needs at this time.

WONDER
Dr. Richard Anderson alerted me to these photos from outer space.  We discussed with our mutual friend, Dr. Jim Bagian, physician, astronaut, engineer, Renaissance Man, who had the opportunity to enjoy such sights during his time in space as an astronaut.  By the way, Dr. Bagian will deliver the keynote address at the Leadership Conference held the day before the annual PIAA Meeting.   This year it will be in Scottsdale.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and good tidings to all no matter how you honor your beliefs.  AND Happy New Year!  A time for thanks for family and friends.  Peace on earth to all but those who try to spread hate and kill innocents. The evil ones will not triumph.  The good folks always overcome the evil folks.  This I believe.  And it will be done as long as men and women of courage exist.  And I have had the privilege to meet many such heroes who fight the evil ones.  I am very thankful for that privilege and I thank them whenever I get the opportunity.
And to my friends who are fighting cancer this season, never give up.  Miracle drugs and new treatments may happen at any moment!
Best wishes for health in the year ahead.

DOUBLE P.S.  The carpet was removed recently, slate placed on floor this week, and the new hot water heater was installed today!  The broken hot water heater kept me from the Interim Meeting when we again had a minor flood from the heater!  That is another thing to be thankful for.

PALMISANO TO ASSUME ROLE AS MAG EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ON JANUARY 10

ATLANTA – Donald J. Palmisano Jr. will succeed David A. Cook as the Medical Association of Georgia’s (MAG) executive director on January 10, MAG President Dan DeLoach, M.D., announced today.

Last week, Georgia Gov.-elect Nathan Deal announced that Cook will become the Commissioner of the state Department of Community Health. Having joined MAG in 2006, Palmisano has been MAG’s General Counsel and Director of Government Relations.

“There is a clear consensus among our physician leaders that Donald J. Palmisano Jr. has the kind of exemplary background and skill set and strategic vision that we need to lead this organization in 2011 and beyond,” Dr. DeLoach said. “And that’s critical when you consider that the medical profession has never faced such considerable challenges.”

Palmisano stated that, “We are going to maintain our role as the leading voice for the medical profession in Georgia, and we’re always going to do what’s best for patients in the state.” He added that MAG will focus on the issues that physicians have said matter the most to them, including tort reform and health insurance reform and Medicare/Medicaid.

Palmisano also stressed that MAG will be upgrading its continuing medical education programs for physicians, as well as helping its members cope with the effects of the new national health care bill.

Palmisano represented individual physicians as a private practicing attorney from 1999 to 2005. He graduated from the Loyola School of Law in New Orleans, where he was a member of the National Moot Court Team.

Of Cook, Dr. DeLoach said, “Physicians in this state owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his tireless efforts and his countless contributions to the medical profession.”

MAG has more than 6,000 members. Go to www.mag.org for additional information.

DJP Comment:  We are proud of you, son!   And best wishes for success to David Cook in his new role as Georgia’s Commissioner of the state Department of Community Health.  And thanks to physicians of MAG for their continued leadership in fighting government’s destructive interference in the practice of Medicine!

Stay well,

Donald

“On careful review, the Court must conclude that Section 1501 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act–specifically the Minimum Essential Coverage Provision–exceeds the constitutional boundaries of congressional power.”

3 EXCERPTS of survey November 18, 2010

Nation’s Frontline Physicians Unhappy With Health Care Reform Measures

The Physicians Foundation today released the results of a national survey of physicians that finds strong negative feelings towards the new health care reform law and fear that patient care will suffer in the months and years ahead. The survey was intended to gauge physicians’ initial reaction to the passage of health reform and to learn the ways in which they plan to respond to it.

The research, conducted by Merritt Hawkins, a national physician search and consulting firm, on behalf of the Foundation, comes on the two-year anniversary of the Foundation’s first national physician survey that found growing dissatisfaction among doctors as they struggle with less time for patient care and increased time dealing with non-clinical paperwork, difficulty receiving reimbursement and burdensome government regulations. The new research reinforces those findings and shows that the new health care reform could intensify existing problems for doctors and worsen the shortage of primary care doctors, making it more difficult for patients to access quality care.

The new research reinforces those findings and shows that the new health care reform could intensify existing problems for doctors and worsen the shortage of primary care doctors, making it more difficult for patients to access quality care.

“Physicians support reform; in fact, we were the ones leading the fight against the status quo. But this new research shows that doctors strongly believe the law is not working like it needs to – for them, or for their patients,” said Lou Goodman, PhD, President. “For any health care reform effort to be successful, it must include the viewpoint of our nation’s doctors. Their perspective from the front-lines of patient care is critical in determining what’s broken in our system and how we can fix it.”

——

Key research findings include:

• The majority of physicians (60%) said health reform will compel them to close or significantly restrict their practices to certain categories of patients. Of these, 93% said they will be forced to close or significantly restrict their practices to Medicaid patients, while 87% said they would be forced to close or significantly restrict their practices to Medicare patients.

• 40% of physicians said they would drop out of patient care in the next one to three years, either by retiring, seeking a non-clinical job within healthcare, or by seeking a non-healthcare related job.

• The majority of physicians (59%) said health reform will cause them to spend less time with patients.

• While over half of physicians said health reform will cause patient volumes in their practices to increase, 69% said they no longer have the time or resources to see additional patients in their practices while still maintaining quality of care.

• 67% of physicians said their initial reaction to passage of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was either “somewhat negative” or “very negative” and a great majority (86%) believes the viewpoint of physicians was not adequately represented to policy makers during the run-up to passage of the law.

• Physicians are almost evenly divided over the relative importance of SGR (36%) and health reform (34%) to their practices, while 30% are unsure which will have the greatest impact.
