Update on 3 friends who served America during the Vietnam War
I do a lot of reading about WWII and have the advantage to visit frequently the National WWII Museum here in New Orleans. But as a doctor who was in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, I always am interested in stories about friends who also served during during the years of the war in Vietnam. Some stories, i.e., Paul Galanti, P.O.W., are in my leadership books and I give an update on Paul here. Also, I now bring to your attention 2 other Americans, who are doctors, and who continue to help others by sharing knowledge for health and pleasure.
Dr. Richard Carmona
Former Surgeon General of the United States
I had the privilege to get to know Dr. Carmona during my tour of duty on AMA Board and during AMA presidency. I sat next to him at some dinners when he was keynote speaker. He can mesmerized the audience when he speaks without notes or teleprompter and relates the American Dream as experienced by him. On many occasions we ran into each other in the Atlanta Airport as we got a late dinner together, mine usually from Popeye’s and his a more healthy choice, between plane changes.
Dr. Carmona is now at Canyon Ranch and Canyon Ranch Institute: http://canyonranchinstitute.org/
He is on Twitter: @DrRichCarmona
By the way, he did a great job this Saturday night on The Huckabee Show discussing the chemical weapon Sarin.

“After dropping out of high school, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. While serving, he earned his General Equivalency Diploma and went on to become a combat-decorated Special Forces Vietnam veteran.”

“…combat in Vietnam in the Army Special Forces as a Green Beret and medic, for which he earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star,”

Dr. Joe Gutierrez
Past President Medical Society District of Columbia and member AMA House of Delegates: Bonsai expert!
Joe served with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam and did many surgical procedures there.
Northern Virginia Bonsai Society has newsletters with Joe’s trees.
Here is another group in 2009 featuring Joe’s 1st place Bonsai Douglas Fir.

To shed some light on “what a bonsai is — how bonsai are developed and cared for,” there will be a presentation by Joseph Gutierrez, of the Potomac Bonsai Association. Visitors will have a close-up look “to learn a bit about how to judge a bonsai — to increase their appreciation of bonsai.” He will focus “on azaleas as bonsai, since azaleas do very well in this area, are readily available.”
Bonsai can help us “better learn how to appreciate plants and trees … and how to do the proper things to a tree at the proper time,” Gutierrez said. “Bonsai are living things, they constantly undergo change because they continue to grow; and learning what happens to a tree during the various seasons helps one enjoy and appreciate bonsai more.”
Asked about the pots used for Bonsai, Guiterrez indicated that the pots must suit the tree and the style of the tree. “Some pots are considered to be quite “masculine,” as are the trees that are planted into them … e.g., heavy trunks; other trees are quite “feminine,” as some are very slender and graceful or flowering trees … and these are often planted into glazed or ornamented pots.”

Paul Galanti
Naval Aviator; P.O.W.
My writings about Paul are in my leadership books. Details of his almost 7 years in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” are in my book, ON LEADERSHIP.
Here is a video you must watch. Dr. Joe Gutierrez alerted me to it. It discusses the visit of the POWs to the White House when President Nixon negotiated the POW release and the 40 year reunion of that visit.

Thanks to all of you who served our country in the military. I know many of you who never speak about your tours but please know that America appreciates your service. I certainly do.
LAGNIAPPE: It any of you write a blog or write a column in your medical society newsletter and wish to have it available to the world on the Internet, it is simple to get a Web link and post your updates or columns using WordPress. (More info at: http://wordpress.org/about/ ) That is what I do with my DJP Updates. You don’t have to be a programmer to post or edit using WordPress. Also, once posted, the search engines quickly pick up the articles. Of course, you could post on FaceBook etc. but the advantage of your own Web address and WordPress is that anyone can visit without joining or seeing advertisements, etc.
