Their website is ModernHealthcare.com) The following is a list of some of my favorite New Orleans restaurants: Bayona 430 Dauphine St. New Orleans, La. 504/525-4455 This restaurant is located in the French Quarter and has a woman chef/owner. French/Mediterranean food served. The food is outstanding. Advance reservations needed. Fausto’s 530 Veterans Blvd. Metairie, La. (504) 833-7632 This restaurant is small in size and the food is delightful. It is owned by Fausto and Roland DiPietro and one or both usually will be there to attend to your culinary desires. Be sure to try the marinated crab claws. Drago’s 3232 N. Arnoult at 17th St. Metairie, La. (a suburb of New Orleans) 504/888-9254 This place has the best grilled oysters I have ever tasted. About 25 minutes by cab from the French Quarter. Commander’s Palace 1403 Washington Ave. New Orleans, La. 504/899-8221 Located in the Garden District. French/New Orleans cuisine. On almost everyone’s list of favorite New Orleans restaurants. About a 10 minute cab ride from the French Quarter. If you go by auto, let them valet park your car. In my opinion, it is best not to wander about in this neighborhood. However, I do believe it is safe if you go by cab or have them valet park your car. Advance reservations needed. Mother’s Restaurant 401 Poydras (corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas Street) New Orleans, La. 504/523-9656 A classic New Orleans neighborhood restaurant located near many of the downtown hotels, including the Hilton and the Windsor Court. Classic po-boy sandwiches on French bread including the Ferdi po-boy, as well as red beans and rice, gumbo and other delights are served here. No reservations taken and it is often crowded. Cafeteria style presentation of food. The food is great and people frequently stand by a counter to eat their food because all the tables are full. This is a good choice for lunch. It is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and breakfast is available also. It is walking distance from the Hilton. I remind my friends that I never advise them to walk from hotels to restaurants in a large city at night. New Orleans is no exception. This is my personal rule I follow when I travel. I consider the walk to Mother’s from the downtown hotels and French Quarter safe in the daytime. It is probably safe at night too, but, out of an abundance of caution, I tell tourists it is better to catch a cab rather than risk getting lost and possibly getting mugged. Windsor Court Hotel 300 Gravier St. New Orleans, La. 504/523-6000 This is my favorite hotel anywhere. It is a couple of blocks from the Hilton. It has been picked as the #1 hotel in the world in some travel surveys. This restaurant has been complimented by Gene Bourg. Afternoon tea at the Windsor is the closest you will come to England in New Orleans. Tea is served from 2-6 p.m. daily and reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends. This is a small beautiful hotel that you would enjoy just visiting. Look at the beautiful artwork including the large paintings in each elevator. The rooms are wonderful. Gabrielle’s Restaurant Dinner — Thursday – Saturday (4pm to 9pm) 504/603-2344 2441 Orleans Ave New Orleans, La. 70119 504/948-6233 https://www.gabriellerestaurant.com Galatoire’s Restaurant 209 Bourbon St. New Orleans, La. 504/525-2841; 504/525-2021 Emeril’s Restaurant 800 Tchoupitoulas St. New Orleans, La. 504/538-9393 You probably have seen him on TV and he has great cookbooks. Located in warehouse district. Annunciation Restaurant In Warehouse District. “Updated” Creole style. Excellent. 1016 Annunciation St. New Orleans, La. 504/568-0245 La Petite Grocery Restaurant and Bar http://www.lapetitegrocery.com Excellent. Two favorites of mine are the Turtle Bolognese and the Griddled Octopus. The octopus is tender and the taste equals or surpasses that at Remi’s Restaurant in New York City. Justin Devillier is Executive Chef and Owner: “…he puts his creative spin on traditional New Orleans cuisine with dishes like Turtle Bolognese and Blue Crab Beignets. Devillier has been named a James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef: South in 2012, 2013, and 2014, and was also named 2014’s “Chef of the Year” by New Orleans Magazine.” 4238 Magazine Street New Orleans, LA 70115 504/891-3377 Nephew’s Ristorante Owner/Chef Frank Catalanotto is the nephew of the late Tony Angello (see note below) and he cooked at Tony Angello’s. Frank Catalanotto has all of the recipes! Wonderful service and excellent food. The “Feed Me” option is available just as it was at Tony Angello’s. This is located in Metairie and about a 20 minute cab ride from downtown New Orleans hotels. Casual attire. Dinner Tuesday-Saturday. Tony Angello’s (NOW CLOSED) (It was rebuilt and reopened after Hurricane Katrina destruction! I visited and Tony’s daughter gave me a tour on May 29, 2007 of the new construction. The reopening is great news! New hours 6-10 PM and closed on Sunday and Monday.) 6262 Fleur De Lis Dr. New Orleans, La. 504/488-0888 A favorite of mine for many years. Italian food served. About a 20 minute cab ride from the French Quarter or the Hilton to the restaurant. If you choose this restaurant, call in advance for reservations and ask for maitre d’ Dale Messina. Ask if a private room is available. Ask Dale to select the courses and do not order from the menu. You probably will feel compelled to reward Dale seperately for this wonderful dining experience. (CLOSED on Sunday and Monday) IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEALTH NOTICE Here is some good news about smoke-free restaurants! A new Louisiana law goes into effect Monday, January 1, 2007 forbidding smoking in Louisiana restaurants. Stand-alone bars and casinos are not covered by this legislative act. Now you have my eclectic list. The above list is my opinion. It is doubtful that any two New Orleanians would have the same list. I eliminate a restaurant if I find the ventilation system allows cigarette smoke to drift my way in the non- smoking section. I eliminate a restaurant if it is too noisy. I eliminate a restaurant if the atmosphere is snobby or unfriendly. Finally, I have to like the food before the restaurant is added to my list. Remember, there are many wonderful restaurants in New Orleans that I have not mentioned. Enjoy! | |
